Choosing a new career path can feel overwhelming, whether you’re just starting out or looking towards a new path further along in your career.
Here are our tips to move you closer to your dream career move, whether you’re looking to move organisations or make a major change:
- Identify your strengths, interests and passions, transferable skills and successes – Consider your previous jobs and education, what you enjoyed and where you excelled. Think about hobbies and voluntary work and include your achievements here too. Ask others, sometimes your friends and family can see attributes that you can’t see yourself.
- Research jobs and sectors where you can use your skills, experience and interests. The following resources may be helpful:
- Identify any gaps. Be honest with yourself, can you fill these? Is it realistic for you to retrain? Can you gain the extra experience needed through volunteering, an internship or work experience. Will you need to take a drop in salary and is that feasible?
- Set yourself some achievable goals. Break the larger goal of ‘changing career path’ down into bitesize chunks and work through them together with your Employment Adviser. Look out for our new workshop, ‘Choosing your perfect career’, coming soon.
