January is, for many, one of the most difficult times of the year.
A combination of post-festive blues, gloomy weather and a return to the daily grind can contribute to feelings of low mood, sadness and fatigue.
It can also be the month that many use to reflect on the past and/or set goals for the future, which can often bring about feelings of anxiety, disappointment and self-doubt.
That is why, in January, there are a number of initiatives in our community designed to get people supporting each other and speaking openly about mental health.
Monday 20 January marks Blue Monday – pioneered by the Samaritans and brought to the community by Mitzvah Day. This annual initiative encourages everyone to reach out for a cuppa and a catch-up with the people they care about.
It’s the perfect reminder of the need to support one another, especially during the winter months when isolation can feel stronger.
As you can see from the picture above, it’s something the Work Avenue team will be taking part in throughout today!
The end of this month then sees Mental Health Shabbat (31 January/1 February) take place.
Run by Jami – the mental health service for the Jewish community – it’s a chance to raise awareness of mental illness and distress and share ideas on how to support ourselves and others within the community.
At Work Avenue, we know how important protecting and prioritising your mental health is – whether in your job search, the workplace or running your own business. You can read our recent article offering tips and advice here – https://theworkavenue.org.uk/mental-health-workplace.
