Contract Period: September to June (full school year)
Role Overview
Teach Hebrew and Jewish Studies sessions during term time as part of WLS's education programme, including lesson planning, delivering classes, and engaging in occasional wider community activities.
Working Hours
• Sundays during term time: 9:30am-1pm
• Teaching hours: 10am-12:30pm (including 20 minutes break and 20 minutes of Kehillah)
• Additional hours: 1 hour per Sunday for at home lesson-planning
• Optional activities: Teachers may (but are not obligated to) take part in out-of-hours events
such as festivals and special services. If they do, they are paid an extra session (full Sunday rate).
• Training days: 2-3 teacher training days per year – attendance expected, paid as an extra session.
Pay
• £20 per hour – 4.5 hours per Sunday (to include 1 hour of planning/lesson plan submission)
• Additional 12.07% holiday pay allowance added to hourly rate, paid monthly
• £20 (+ 12.07% holiday pay) if unable to attend but a lesson plan is still submitted
• Paid monthly in arrears (around the last working day of each month), by bank transfer, after tax/NI deductions
• Auto-enrolment in the Synagogue's pension scheme (subject to eligibility; opt-out available)
Lesson Planning
• Submit by 2pm each Tuesday, the week before the session (or a month/term in advance if preferred)
• Must include a resource list and templates needed
• Teachers are not expected to prepare physical resources (printing, cutting, laminating) – this is handled by the Education Team
• A lesson plan is still required even if absent (paid at £20 + holiday pay)
Mandatory Requirements
• Enhanced DBS check
• Proof of right to work in the UK
• Safeguarding & Child Safety training (start of school year, usually first day; must be completed before commencing teaching if missed)
• Compliance with GDPR – confidential information about WLS, members, or families must not be
disclosed
