Expertax is an independent accountancy practice based in Watford, providing accountancy, tax and business support services to a varied portfolio of small and medium-sized businesses and individuals.

We are a relatively small team, which means our staff get exposure to a broad range of work and the opportunity to build relationships with clients.

We are looking for an Accounts Assistant or Semi-Senior to join our team. We are open-minded about the level of the appointment and are interested in hearing from candidates with at least 18 months' experience in practice, from those progressing through AAT to experienced AAT-qualified or ACCA part-qualified candidates.

The role:

You will work across a portfolio of owner-managed businesses and individuals, with responsibilities appropriate to your existing experience.

Your work is likely to include:

• Preparing accounts for limited companies, sole traders and partnerships;

• Preparing corporation tax computations and returns;

• Preparing personal Self Assessment tax returns;

• Bookkeeping and maintaining accounting records;

• Preparing and reviewing VAT returns;

• Carrying out bank, control account and other balance sheet reconciliations;

• Reviewing clients' accounting records and identifying missing information or discrepancies;

• Liaising directly with clients to obtain records, answer queries and progress work;

• Dealing with HMRC and Companies House correspondence and submissions; and

• Supporting other members of the team on more complex assignments.

Person Specification:

You must have at least 18 months' recent experience working within a UK accountancy practice.

We are open-minded about qualifications and the stage you have reached in your career. You may be studying AAT, already AAT qualified, starting or progressing through ACCA, or simply have good practical experience gained within an accountancy practice.

What matters most to us is your experience, the quality of your work and your ability to take responsibility appropriate to your level. We would be happy to hear from both candidates who want to continue studying and progress professionally, and experienced candidates who are looking for a stable, long-term role without necessarily wanting to pursue further qualifications or management.

We are looking for someone who:

• Takes pride in producing accurate work;

• Is organised and able to manage deadlines;

• Is comfortable asking questions when something does not make sense;

• Can investigate differences rather than simply forcing figures to agree;

• Communicates clearly and professionally with clients and colleagues;

• Takes responsibility for their own work; and

• Enjoys working as part of a small team.

Systems:

We use a mixture of desktop and cloud-based systems, including Xero, QuickBooks, TaxCalc and Microsoft Excel.

Previous experience with these systems would be an advantage, although training will be provided on our systems where required.

Additional information:

For those who want to progress, there will be opportunities to take on greater responsibility as your experience develops. Equally, we value experienced people who enjoy the practical work of accountancy and want to build a long-term career doing it well.

We support professional development, but there is no expectation that everyone follows the same career path We can provide study support for AAT Level 4 and a comprehensive ACCA study package, including tuition, study materials, paid study leave and examination fees.

ACCA Approved Employer – Platinum.
