I was really unhappy at work. Feeling frustrated and overwhelmed in my job started to affect my mental health and wellbeing. I always thought there was something wrong with me as I couldn’t read a long email or concentrate in the same way as my colleagues. This would trigger anxiety and start a cycle of me being even less able to focus than before. Then I was diagnosed as ADHD and this helped me to start to rebuild my life, including a return to work.
“She showed me things were not as bad as I thought”
My adviser – Mel – was just brilliant. She wasn’t judgemental; just helpful and empathetic. She showed me things were not as bad as I thought, dismantling my uncertainties and instilling in me confidence and belief. Those are powerful tools! We practised interviewing and we worked together to redraft my CV. Crucially, she also helped me to find the words to ask for help if I needed and to not get embarrassed.
Work Avenue supported me on my journey back to work. The team are professional, helpful, motivational and compassionate. Everyone needs help and an extra hand sometimes. It’s a free service, so why wouldn’t you go to see them?
