Britain’s jobs market is now in its longest downturn since the early 2000s – surpassing the slumps brought about by the pandemic and financial crisis.
Worrying figures from the newly-released S&P Global UK Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) show employers have reduced headcount for a 24th consecutive month.
The influential PMI survey found firms reporting heavy pressure to cut costs – driven by rising energy prices, red tape, minimum wage hikes, National Insurance increases, and persistent inflation across business expenses – along with a growing number saying that they need fewer workers due to investment in AI.
There was some more positive news in the report, which found the reduction in overall job numbers has slowed down and that, while service-based businesses are hurting, manufacturing employment has shown resilience with modest job gains in the sector.
Responding to the data, Chris Williamson, Chief Business Economist at S&P Global, said: “We are seeing a worrying combination of disappointingly sluggish economic growth and intensifying inflationary pressures.”
