Purpose of the role

The Membership Engagement Director will lead NNLS's membership engagement strategy, helping members build meaningful connections with the community, supporting volunteer leadership, strengthening member participation and ensuring an excellent member experience from first enquiry through every stage of synagogue life. The post holder will bring warmth, enthusiasm, friendliness and experience in community engagement, volunteer management or membership organisations. They will enjoy creating opportunities for people to connect, participate and lead.

Job Description

Community Engagement

  • Develop and deliver NNLS's strategy for member engagement, participation and belonging.
  • Create opportunities for members to connect through ritual life, neighbourhood networks, social activities, learning, hospitality, pastoral initiatives, social action and member-led programmes.
  • Build engagement pathways that support members at key life stages and encourage deeper participation in community life.

Volunteer Leadership

  • Recruit, support and develop volunteers and volunteer leaders across the congregation.
  • Create effective processes for volunteer onboarding, communication, recognition and succession planning.
  • Oversee volunteer deployment and scheduling to support community activities and programmes.
  • Oversee a volunteer database to track members' skills, interests and involvement, helping to match people with opportunities and grow engagement across the community.

Membership Journey

  • Oversee and continually improve the member journey from initial enquiry and joining through the first 18 months and beyond.
  • Develop initiatives that increase member engagement, satisfaction and retention.
  • Gather member feedback and insight to inform future community development.

Member-Led Groups and Tikkun Olam (Social Action)

  • Support the development and sustainability of member-led groups, neighbourhood initiatives and special interest communities.
  • Work with the rabbinic team and lay leaders to manage, encourage and expand participation in NNLS's Tikkun Olam programmes.

Leadership and Management

  • Contribute towards the strategic and organisational management of the wider team.
  • Line manage the Programmes & Events Manager and Membership Co-ordinator, providing leadership, support and strategic direction.
  • Data, Systems and Compliance
  • Use CRM systems, engagement data and member insight to improve participation, communication and community outcomes.

Support GDPR compliance and good practice relating to member and volunteer data.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience in community engagement, membership, volunteer management or community development.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and engage diverse groups of people.
  • Experience recruiting, supporting and developing volunteers.
  • Strong communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills.
  • Organised, proactive and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience using databases, CRM systems and digital engagement tools.
  • Ability to think strategically while delivering practical results.
  • Commitment to the values of Masorti Judaism.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working in a Jewish, faith-based, charitable or membership organisation.
  • Experience in member journey design, retention or customer/member experience.
  • Understanding of social action and volunteer-led community initiatives.
  • Experience analysing engagement data and producing reports to inform decision-making.
