Role Overview

Responsible for the safe, secure, compliant and efficient day-to-day operation of a large education site and its grounds. This role demands hands-on operational leadership, coordination of planned and reactive maintenance, contractor oversight, management of the caretaking and cleaning teams, and a strong personal sense of accountability.

Core Focus Areas

Premises & Safety

  • Oversee the general safety, maintenance, security and upkeep of the school premises and grounds.
  • Ensure a clean, safe and welcoming environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
  • Reactive & Planned Maintenance
  • Supervise contractors and monitor the quality of work.
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee both reactive repairs and planned maintenance works.

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Support ongoing compliance monitoring.
  • Coordinate statutory systems including fire safety, water hygiene, PAT testing and electrical inspections.

Role Specification & Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the safety, security, maintenance and upkeep of the school buildings and grounds.
  • Plan and coordinate reactive repairs and preventative maintenance programmes.
  • Supervise contractors and ensure work is completed safely and to a high standard.
  • Lead fire safety procedures, routine site inspections and health and safety audits.
  • Support room layouts, site changes and maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Supervise and manage the caretaking, cleaning and external contractor teams.

Experience & Knowledge

The successful candidate will have:

  • A minimum of three years' experience in facilities, estates or site management, including experience managing people.
  • A good understanding of health and safety legislation, including COSHH, asbestos awareness and safeguarding.
  • Experience managing or monitoring statutory compliance, including:PAT Testing
  • Fixed Wire Testing
  • Legionella and Water Hygiene
  • Practical knowledge of building maintenance, including plumbing, heating, electrical systems or general building fabric.
  • Previous experience within a school or similarly regulated environment is desirable.

  • Calm and reliable under pressure.
  • Practical and hands-on approach with excellent attention to detail.
  • Confident communicator, able to liaise with senior management while leading a team of caretakers and cleaners.
