That’s how I would describe accessing the Richard Mintz Bursary Fund and my dealings with Work Avenue, says James Payne, a recipient of the Fund and Work Avenue client.
James started work as a quantity surveyor at a major construction firm while he was finishing his university degree. A keen body builder with a steady online following, James then implemented a career switch to become a personal trainer and coach. Business was picking up nicely but then the pandemic struck, all but wiping out his income. A return to the career drawing board was needed.
James explains,
“I had been thinking about returning to quantity surveying anyway but the pandemic pushed my hand. It was such a scary and uncertain time, and I realised that I missed the camaraderie, stability and responsibility that being a quantity surveyor afforded. Having been away from the industry for about ten years I lacked confidence and knew that my skills and knowledge needed updating. I found an accredited course online, and was about to dip into my savings when an email telling me about the Bursary Fund from Work Avenue landed in my inbox!! Such fortuitous timing!
I can’t begin to explain how delighted I was that my application was successful. The course and Fund have been transformational. The Fund’s support eased stress I had about paying for the course, allowing me to focus solely on my studies. Aware of the investment in myself and future, I worked really hard to complete the training ahead of schedule.
The course restored my confidence and reminded me of my ability to successfully get things done!
I now have a job I enjoy with a great and regular income. I actually found it just as I was about to start the course but I made sure that potential employers knew I was committed to professional development, and I think that helped me to get this job. I can’t thank Work Avenue enough for helping me to open doors, giving me the chance to be in work I enjoy, while taking steps towards financial security”.
