Head of Teaching & Learning – Gateways

Hours: 8.30 – 4:30 pm Mon to Thu & 9am – 1.30pm Fri (to start September 2024).

Reporting directly to the Head Teacher, you will hold the day-to-day responsibility for the educational delivery for gateways provision. As a member of the SLT, you will contribute towards the strategic direction of the charity, which will include the development of the curriculum, assessments and delivery for the part-time programme. 

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

 Ensure the high quality of the curriculum and educational standards of gateways courses, in line with relevant standards and regulations

● Manage and monitor the quality of education gateways delivers and ensure that curriculum plans, resources and materials are disseminated to staff effectively to ensure excellent provision for students

● Create bespoke education programmes/pathways for each student, monitor student progress to ensure they are meeting their goals, devise strategies to help students achieve their educational targets and make recommendations to the Headteacher for student progression

● Oversee and offer day to day support and assistance to subject tutors to help students achieve their educational targets

● Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practices, provide constructive feedback, and support continuous professional development for the teaching staff

● Lead and coordinate staff training sessions, workshops, and professional development activities to improve teaching and learning practices across gateways

● Identifying and implementing innovative teaching methodologies and technologies to enhance the learning experience and engagement of students

● Research and implement new courses to enhance the offering to students

● Collaborate with external agencies, parents, and guardians to create a supportive network and promote positive partnerships in the students' learning journey

● Together with the Headteacher, Head of Pastoral and SENCO, screen and assess incoming students to ensure the most appropriate educational support plan is put in place for each student.

● Assess appropriate qualification levels for individual students

● Contribute to a regular review of the education aspects of gateways, ensuring it meets statutory requirements

● Ensure gateways’ educational policies are regularly reviewed and updated in line with JCQ regulations

● Oversee the work of the Examinations Officer ensuring that all JCQ standards are met, as per the regulations in force at the time. If the exam officer is unable to fulfil their duties due to absence, the head of education will be responsible for covering their duties

● Share responsibility for ensuring HUBMIS (student management information system) is updated and monitored on a day-to-day basis related to all educational data

Person Specification (Essential):

● Qualified Teacher Status

● Honours degree

● Evidence of recent professional development related to whole school improvement

● Experience in designing educational plans for young people

● Experience working with young people who are out of mainstream education

● Experience working with young people facing social, emotional or behavioural challenges both within and outside

mainstream school.

● Experience working within secondary education

Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

Extremely thorough, with excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills

Motivated, highly organised, with initiative and excellent time management skills

Successfully working under pressure, with multiple demands and in a changing environment

Solid, appropriate IT skills, including strong use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Able to interact confidently and build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders

● Commitment to the Gateways mission, ethos and equal opportunities policy, together with high standards of education, care and behaviour

● Professional manner, ability to work efficiently and effectively

● Outgoing, friendly and willing to pitch in and help others within the wider team.

● Flexible with a proactive and creative approach to problem-solving

● Strong team work and communication skills with a positive attitude and obvious drive.

● A confident and friendly manner with vulnerable young people, staff and referring organisations

● Ability to use own initiative and work alone as necessary

Natural ability to work in teams and form positive relationships effectively
