Communications Manager- Reform Judaism

We are looking for a creative communications professional with proven experience of success. This is a key operational post to promote the ethos, values and work of Reform/Progressive Judaism, both within the movement and externally.
You will be responsible for ensuring our communications are consistent and appealing, using both traditional and new media to deliver coverage. Your ability to proactively seek opportunities to promote Reform Judaism will be key to the success of the position.
You will need demonstrable skills including writing relevant and engaging copy and using the intranet, internet and social media platforms as well as the ability to work to strict deadlines and remain calm under pressure.
Your experience in developing effective internal and external relationships, ability to work proactively and independently as well the ability to speak to people from all walks of life are also a pre-requisite. You must have an adaptable approach to your work together with sound judgement, honesty and integrity.
The successful candidate will have an opportunity to provide input to our communications strategy.

Person Specification:
  • Excellent user of IT using a wide range of MS Office and software
  • Creativity and knowledge in developing websites
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to relate to people at all levels
  • Ability to produce informative and engaging content for a variety of channels and audiences
  • A keen eye for detail Excellent organisation and administrative skills with the ability to work effectively to deadlines, meet targets and achieve demonstrable results.
  • The ability to prioritise workload effectively
  • The ability to creatively produce flyers and promotional material
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate experience of:
  • Working successfully in communications, public relations or journalism
  • Successfully utilising all channels of on-line/social media
  • Developing and managing a website
  • Developing positive relationships with a wide range of people, including media outlets
  • Significant experience of using social media with an interest in emerging on line trends
  • Researching and writing copy, blogs, web content and press releases (that can be tailored for Twitter and other social media platforms) resulting in consistent messaging
  • Meeting objectives and deliverables within pre-agreed timescales
  • Successfully managing multiple projects
Special Knowledge
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of Reform and/or Progressive Judaism
  • Knowledge of the wider national and international issues affecting the Jewish community
  • An understanding of our ethos and values

Job Responsibilities
  • Maintaining media relations, both re-actively and proactively to optimise coverage in specialist (Jewish etc), local, national and electronic media, including newspapers, broadcast media, social networking websites, ensuring positive narrative that reflects our beliefs and values that are also in line with our current objectives.
  • Overseeing and developing the Reform Judaism website and its sub-websites to ensure that it is kept up to date with engaging content reflecting the current vision and our messages resulting in increased awareness of Reform Judaism in the UK.
  • Understanding our work and priorities and finding ways to utilise media and publicity opportunities to promote Reform Judaism.
  • Ensuring Reform Judaism responds in a timely and appropriate manner to current events ensuring the Reform voice is heard by both members, the Jewish community and the public at large.
  • Managing the Jewish News Progressive Page contributors’ rota, ensuring that contributions are received on time and that we receive coverage in line with our current agreements.
  • Coordinating two-way communication with synagogues and other stakeholders (e.g. The Board, RSY-Netzer, Leo Baeck College) ensuring maximum coverage from all perspectives.
  • Overseeing and coordinating all communications within the wider community promoting Reform Judaism to maximum advantage.
  • Coordinating and editing the Movement Update fortnightly, to incorporate the latest news, articulating our vision and messages.
  • Proactively provide PR and communications support to our communities raising the profile of their community, events and subsequently Reform Judaism.
  • Managing advertising on our website ensuring that advertisements are appropriate and in date.
  • Ensuring coherent messages and house style are understood and delivered by all staff on all outgoing communications and publications to reflect consistency.
  • Reporting on communications statistics and achievements to provide the Board and other relevant stakeholders (i.e constituent synagogues) with accurate data.
  • Liaising with the Board Member with the communication portfolio and the Public Affairs Director to contribute to overall strategy for the communications department.
  • Manage the contract with our external media monitoring agency.
  • Prioritise work collaboratively with line manager.
  • Undertaking other duties and projects as agreed with the Chief Operating Officer within the scope of the job, as directed from time to time.
