Turning the Wheel Full Circle

Dan Brand, Founder of SnapRevise shares his Work Avenue business journey as he prepares to leave WE Hub.

TELL US ABOUT SNAPREVISE
SnapRevise provides online revision content to GCSE and A-level students, helping them achieve the grades they deserve to secure their uni place.

HOW DID YOU GET IN TO THIS?
I studied civil engineering at the University of Sydney, and became quite fed up at how bad the quality of the teaching was.  I stopped going to lectures and found myself using a lot of online resources, including tutorials from PhD students, which I found really useful.  This was the foundation of my first business in Australia, called SpoonFeedMe, which focused on online tutorials which I sold on campus.  I learned a lot from this early business, so when I moved to the UK in 2016, I was able to harness all my experiences and start SnapRevise, concentrating on the schools’ space.

WHAT IS THE BEST BIT ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I love that I am in control of my own destiny in the workplace: the freedom of the entrepreneur! I also love the fact that there is always something new to be learnt, for example, in the fields of sales, marketing and tech.

AND THE WORST?
That everything is on my shoulders.  Not only am I responsible for earning my own living, but I am also responsible for everyone else’s too in the team.  If you are not disrupting, you will be disrupted.  So for that reason, you always have to have a restless energy to stay ahead of each and every trend.  That’s always on my mind.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WITH WORK AVENUE?
I started out with an allocated desk at WE Hub which gave me access to instant and very helpful networks. There is a real sense of community. As my team grew, I was encouraged by Debbie Sheldon to take a dedicated office, which we did and it really helped our development. Much as we would love to stay at WE Hub, our team is now so big that we have taken the decision to move out and take larger office space. We will miss the WE Hub family hugely.

HOW WAS THE SUPPORT FROM THE WORK AVENUE TEAM?
Really helpful, they were super supportive. The business advice and guidance I received from Debbie and her team was always spot on, and as the business grew and I took on staff, I found the HR advice I received invaluable.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR SNAPREVISE?
We now really need to consolidate our client acquisition, so really want to focus on marketing and perhaps changing the way our clients buy our services.  Also, as yet, we do not offer the full range of the curriculum, so that will be another area of development.
