This role is being offered on an initial 3 month temp contract with the possibility of becoming a permanent position.

West London Synagogue (WLS) is Britain’s oldest and foremost Reform Synagogue with an international reputation for excellence. We have approximately 2,800 members and provide a wide range of formal and informal Shabbat and festival services as well as a religion school, study and learning opportunities and youth activities. The synagogue is deeply committed to Social Care with an experienced team providing one-to-one and group support to the community in areas such as managing mental health, bereavement, serious illness, coping with aging and disability and loneliness. The synagogue is also committed to Social Action providing a drop-in centre for asylum seekers, night shelters for the homeless and many other services to help the most needy in our local community and beyond.

Purpose of the Job


To provide accounts support to the Finance Manager and Director of Finance to contribute to the overall efficiency and smooth-running of the Finance function.


To provide effective and efficient administrative support to the Membership team by contributing to the efficient processing and administration of WLS’ membership and events.

Main areas of responsibility


• Helping the Finance Manager accurately maintain and process the purchase ledger including the accurate processing and allocation of all payments (the company credit card, expenses, petty cash, outgoing Direct Debits and Standing Orders).

• Inputting invoices into Sage with the correct nominal and account details and preparing, alongside the Finance Manager, the payment runs.

• Reconciling some balance sheet accounts, including the bank accounts, credit card, petty cash, payroll, and other creditor accounts.

• Helping the Finance Manager in the accurate processing of income and the overall maintenance of the integrity of WLS’ Trial Balance (books and records), including generating invoices and analysing outstanding debtors.

• Providing administration support (including scanning and filing) to the team as and when necessary.

To undertake further tasks as agreed with the Finance Manager/ Director of Finance.


• Supporting the Membership Coordinator in the day-to-day management of the current membership database and helping prepare for the implementation of a new database

• Becoming a key user and knowledge focus for the database including processing and maintaining accurate records; understanding its functionality and reporting

• Creating and processing invoices, direct debits and standing orders for membership and other income, including events, Religion School and external room hire.

• Dealing with members in a professional, polite and sensitive manner building good relationships throughout the congregation and staff;

• Supporting the Membership Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator with the administration of events; including helping with ticketing, event management support (including attending if needed) and post event wrap-up.
