Chief Executive- ORT UK

ORT UK are currently seeking a new Chief Executive with exceptional leadership and personal qualities and with a desire to operate in a challenging and stimulating environment. Reporting to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, your role will be to lead and manage the professional team of four people at ORT UK, oversee strategy, drive the organisation’s fundraising activities, events and operations, and deliver income targets and objectives.

Responsible for : Head of Events and Programmes, Office Administrator, ORT-JUMP Co-ordinator, Communications and Marketing Officer, Bookkeeper
(The Events Coordinator – a position which is in the process of being filled – reports to Head of Events and Progammes)
Holiday entitlement: 25 days' holiday plus Jewish and statutory holidays

Main Purpose of the post:
  • To lead and develop the fundraising activities of ORT UK
  • To implement and devise strategies for on-going income development to specified targets
  • To oversee marketing and PR activities and manage the organisation’s professional staff
  • To oversee and develop the ORT-JUMP programme
  • To represent the charity at appropriate external meetings and events
  • To maintain and build relationship between ORT UK and World ORT and act as a liaison for ORT UK between the two organisations
  • To work with the trustees to ensure the external and internal governance of ORT UK
Main Duties:

o Manage and implement the income development strategy:
- Implement existing Business Plan, produce annual plans, consult on and create a follow-up plan in due course
- Generate new streams of revenue that are sustainable and will broaden the charity’s income base. This will include: major gifts; individual giving; trusts and foundations; corporate; legacies.
- Manage the team responsible for fundraising events and administration, as well as overseeing the supporting functions of marketing and PR.
- Meet annual income generation targets and raise ORT UK’s annual charitable income in accordance with the targets set by the trustees and agreed in the Business Plan.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with major donors, in conjunction with Trustees, including: high net-worth individuals, grant giving trusts and corporates - maximising income generation potential
- Develop and maintain positive working relationship and communication with World ORT to facilitate ORT UK’s aims and objectives
- Ensure the appropriate reporting and evaluation of World ORT projects funded by ORT UK
- Develop strategies and projects to enhance ORT UK’s and World ORT’s profile and awareness within the Anglo-Jewish community
- Encourage a climate of continual reassessment and evaluation of the effectiveness of income development strategies
- Ensure that all income developing activities comply with legislation affecting charitable giving and with health and safety legislation
- Oversee proper gift recording and stewardship of all gifts and ensure all commitments to donors are honoured
- Oversee the cost-effective running of ORT UK’s office, ensuring alignment of overheads with the approved budget
- Manage the key relationship between the ORT UK office and all the individual trustees so that their time and skills are being used appropriately and for the benefit of ORT UK

o Oversee the promotion and marketing of ORT UK:
- Oversee professional staff responsible for devising, implementing and monitoring the marketing and communication aspects of the Business Plan
- Oversee the development of ORT UK’s brand, marketing, communication and PR strategies working in conjunction with colleagues in World ORT
- Maintain and build the charity's database by using the CRM tool, Raiser's Edge, to its full capacity
- Implement and lead on media relations policy as agreed by the trustees to ensure the charity is presented in a consistent and professional manner
- Ensure that the charity’s website is developed, maintained and updated regularly
- Oversee the provision of promotional material for the charity, ensuring a co-ordinated, relevant and professional approach is adopted, maintaining a consistent corporate identity for ORT UK
- Write press releases and speeches to be delivered by yourself or others at large public events

o To oversee and develop the ORT-JUMP programme:
- Manage the professional and lay leadership team
- Ensure educational establishments, mentors and mentees receive professional communications and appropriate training (including reviewing safeguarding policies)
- Explore how the ORT-JUMP programme can be extended without losing sight of ORT UK’s core goals in raising funds for World ORT’s projects
- Increase awareness of ORT UK via the ORT-JUMP programme and encourage mentors and mentees to support the work of ORT UK
- Raise funds for ORT-JUMP specifically - over and above the annual fundraising commitment to support World ORT’s projects
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the ORT-JUMP programme and develop alumni relationships

o Contribute to the strategic planning of the charity as the senior member of the charity’s professional team:
- Share in the management and leadership of the charity
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the strategic plan, ensuring that there is a consistent corporate approach
- Provide periodic reports to the Chair and Board of Trustees and support the Chairman in ensuring that members of the Board of Trustees are briefed and updated
- Work closely with the committees of the Board of Trustees
- Represent the charity at appropriate external meetings and bodies
- Keep up-to-date with developments in the industry and in fundraising and marketing perspectives

o Department management
- Manage, support and motivate the charity’s staff, ensuring the development of operational plans to achieve or exceed targets
- Draft, propose and monitor the annual budget for the charity
- As necessary, appoint staff and be responsible for their welfare and efficiency

o General:
- Develop and maintain current knowledge of issues relating to ORT UK, World ORT and the Jewish and wider third sector
- Ensure good practice as regards the external and internal governance of ORT UK including working with the HR lead at World ORT
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe working environment
- Comply with ORT UK’s Policies and Procedures
- Any other duties that may reasonably be required by the Chair and Board of Trustees from time to time

Person Specification:
Below are the desirable requirements needed to undertake this post and will form a key part in the recruitment process.

Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level and/or with a relevant professional qualification (in sales, marketing, fundraising or PR) or demonstrable relevant experience
Experience
  • A track record of success in income generation obtained either from the commercial or charity sectors
  • The ability to lead and drive all fundraising activities by directing and working as a team player with the Trustees and professional staff
  • Proven track record of determining and delivering challenging income growth targets on a consistent basis and across a range of income streams
  • Proven track record of key influencing, negotiation and decision-making skills used to deliver income targets and objectives
  • Experience of drafting and implementing a successful income development strategy meeting or exceeding targets
  • A track record of leadership and staff performance management
  • Experience of budget strategy and management.
Knowledge/skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with clear personal and professional credibility necessary to represent the charity at a senior level
  • The ability to contribute to the corporate planning processes of the charity
  • Knowledge of income development strategies
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies
  • An understanding of the legal requirements relating to income development (including the Charities Act/Data Protection Act/Health and Safety etc.) and to ensure that all fundraising activities conform to tax and VAT regulations. Ensure that all fundraising activities comply with the Institute of Fundraising’s Code of Fundraising Practice
  • The ability to formulate and implement new ideas for income development
  • Computer literacy and the ability to make use of ICT to support income development strategies
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage, motivate & develop staff, set standards & monitor performance
