Research & Development Officer- JNetics

Role description:    To help research, develop and deliver the GENEius programme and support the other on-going activities of Jnetics. 

Key areas:    

1. GENEius Programme 
•    Support the on-going delivery and evaluation of GENEius in schools
•    Lead the development and facilitate delivery of GENEius for Jewish university students
•    Continue to develop and integrate GENEius pre-marriage resources
•    Continue to develop and help disseminate our hereditary cancer resources 

2.  Barnet clinic – support the on-going promotion of the Barnet Clinic and work with our NHS partners to support professional service delivery.

3. Communications - manage and deliver social media activities and other communications that will raise awareness and improve engagement with our GENEius and other activities. 

4. Website – help maintain and develop the content of the Jnetics and GENEius websites to ensure they are accurate, up-to-date and engaging. 

5. Other activities – respond to general calls/emails, use and help maintain the database, support discrete research projects and admin needs 

Key tasks :        

1. GENEius Programme

•    Working with the GENEius project manager, draft and bespoke key letters and materials; collate resources and equipment; and liaise with volunteers and schools to facilitate professional delivery of the schools' programme
•    Help develop and manage school programme evaluation including analysis of feedback and results
•    Working with the Exec Director, develop a model and resources for effective delivery of the uni programme, based on the research stage
•    Liaise with key university stakeholder organisations e.g. UJS/JSoc, Jewish Chaplaincy, JMed etc. to promote programme uptake.
•    Working with the GENEius project manager, deliver the university programme with the first target group of students including recruiting, training and managing local volunteers.
•    Monitor and evaluate university programme quality and impact.
•    Establish relationships with key personal in the different synagogue movements, and work together to ensure that engaged couples and other relevant members are aware of screening and how to access it 
•    Develop the necessary resources for the pre-marriage programme and disseminate to key contacts and community agencies
•    Monitor and evaluate pre-marriage programme quality and impact.
•    Continue to research, develop and help disseminate information resources about hereditary cancer working with the BYB team
•    Create reference resources about screening opportunities both in the public and private sector. 
•    Work with the BYB programme to monitor its progress and help develop resources. 
•    Develop resources regarding BYB and breast cancer for the website. 
•    Develop hereditary cancer leaflets/flyers (as needed in the future)
•    Support GENEius website development with the provision of content 

2.  Barnet Clinic  

•    Manage participant registration process and communication including phone inquiries, follow-up emails
•    Manage clinic promotion – including contacting shuls, GPs, young adult organisations and others to organise education sessions, publishing of articles and dissemination of clinic posters and flyers. 
•    Monitor promotion activities, track and evaluate service feedback

3. Communications 
•    Collaborate on social media strategy and on-going tasks working with GENEius project manager
•    Write and upload social media posts – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
•    Monitor social media presence and identify and implement ways to increase Jnetics and GENEius profile/following
•    Help draft volunteer emails and newsletters

4. Jnetics website 
•    On-going addition of new content reflecting Jnetics activities e.g. news and events; about us, GENEius programme related.
•    Periodic checking of site content – ensuring that it has updated expert reviews and working links 
•    Periodic monitoring of google analytics to evaluate engagement
•    Help maintain the new rabbi resource section of the website 
•    Help develop and maintain the hereditary cancer area of Jnetics.
•    Ensure that the Jnetics and GENEius websites are complementary – cross-reference content on sites 

5. Other activities 
•    Respond to telephone calls and email enquiries, demonstrating ability to replicate the charity’s standard responses to common queries and directing the caller to another member of staff if needed
•    Support with the transfer of data and maintenance of the database.
•    Support the Jnetics team with events 
•    Support the Jnetics team/administrator with some admin needs e.g. material collation and sending, resource filing etc. related to delivery of Jnetics activities
•    Help manage volunteer communication -  this mainly include volunteer recruitment for school and other events.

Person Specification 

  • Strong project management experience - able to deliver agreed outcomes - essential
  • Ability to prioritise demanding workload- essential
  • Working independently and as part of a team to reach set targets and achieve shared goals- essential
  • Experience of working in/across Jewish community organisations- desirable
  • Work in education – informal and/or formal - desirable
  • Event experience- desirable
  • Educated to degree level – preferably in genetics or biosciences- essential     
  • 2:1 or above in a genetics or biomedical science degree- desirable
Skills and knowledge 
  • Strong interpersonal skills – ability to identify and build positive relations with stakeholders - essential
  • Strong oral and written skills to communicate, influence and persuade a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders- essential
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities and to work flexibly- essential
  • Good research and presentation skills – ability to identify and review suitable resources and present key information in an accessible way to varied audiences- essential 
  • Operational knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and relational databases – able to produce, manipulate and effectively present information to diverse audiences- essential  
  • Experience of working with a CRM database (ideally ThankQ) - desirable
  • Ability to use social media channels e.g. Facebook and Twitter - desirable 
  • Marketing experience- desirable
  • Understanding and ability to work with Jewish community / partner organisations including sensitivities with regards to religious observance- desirable

Other requirements

Work hours:  5 days / 37.5 hours a week (Mon – Fri 0900-1700)
Occasional out-of-hours work required, e.g. support with evening talk
Salary: £21,000 per annum
Holidays: 14 days - plus Jewish high holy days (9 days) and English bank holidays
Notice period: Five weeks
