Occupational Therapist- JAMI

SERVICE SETTING: Elliott Simmons Centre, Leila’s House, Finchley and local community 
RESPONSIBLE TO: Deputy Head of Services
HOURS:  37.5  - Monday - Friday 
(please note that in this role there will be times when you are expected to work outside of traditional working hours) 

1.    To work as a member of the multi skilled team providing support to members of the Jewish community experiencing issues with their mental health. 
2.    To work as part of a multi skilled team to deliver a recovery focussed mental health day service.
3.    To work together with service users, staff and volunteers towards the creation and delivery of the centre programme. 
4.    To manage a 1:1 caseload.
5.    To support people on their recovery journey to identify their goals and work towards them.
6.    To plan and facilitate a recovery focused, user led programme of activities for individuals / groups 
7.    To provide independent living support to tenants at Leila’s House.
8.    To liaise with other housing agencies and signpost where appropriate
9.    To identify vocational needs and support people to access the Employment Project. 
10.    To carry out duties which may not be routine.                            

1.    To work as a full and effective member of the staff team.
2.    To provide specialist skills using recognised standardised and non-standardised evidence based assessment tools.
3.    To assess and address occupational performance skills in the areas of lifestyle management, motivation, interpersonal skills, cognitive skills, self-care productivity and leisure.
4.    To enable and encourage individuals to live as independently as possible through:  
•    Budgeting and bill paying
•    Tasks – cooking skills, cleaning, shopping
•    Support and development of social skills.
•    Good neighbour skills and tenancy issues.
•    Encouraging involvement with local groups, volunteering, educational institutions, employment.
5.    In Line with the service user involvement strategy, coproduce:
•    User led activities designed to develop people’s skills / strengths, promote independence, self-esteem and self-worth
•    User led day services and activities and working with staff and service users to design and develop the monthly activity programme 
•    The development of new initiatives which seek to improve social inclusion and quality of life 
6. Work together with other Jami staff to support people through the employment pathway from assessment to placement using the Individual placement and support model as necessary 
7. To liaise with statutory and non-statutory organizations to provide coordinated support 
8. To maintain up to date and accurate electronic records as required by existing procedures 
9. To participate in service audits and research projects. 
10. To work within Health and Safety guidelines, with particular reference to the Lone Worker Policy and individual risk assessments 
11. To ensure compliance with The Equality Act 2010 , Data Protection Act and Health and Safety legislation 

The post holder will be expected to: - 
•    Attend regular supervision with named supervisor. 
•    Incorporate feedback from supervision into practice. 
•    Participate in a programme of continued personal development. 
•    Attend relevant meetings

PERSON SPECIFICATION (all essential unless stated)

  • Professional qualification in Occupational Therapy 
  • HCPC Registered      
  • Experience of working with people with mental health problems  
  • Experience of devising group based activities which support service users’ needs   
  • Experience of dealing with housing related issues- desirable
  • Working knowledge of Recovery principles and values  
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. 
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people who experience mental health problems. 
  • Ability to develop practical solutions to problems that may arise. 
  • Ability to interact with staff of all disciplines and work as part of a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Ability to form good working relationships with people who have mental health problems. 
  • Ability to help clients develop and maintain living skills, with support from the multiskilled team. 
  • Demonstrates a clear link between occupation and health and wellbeing 
  • An understanding of how mental illness impacts on occupational performance.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of own learning needs and CPD
  • Evidence of participation in evidence based practice 
  • Good IT skills     
  • Local knowledge of  community resources and facilities - desirable
  • Experience and knowledge of the Jewish community -desirable
  • Knowledge of housing related issues e.g. welfare benefits -desirable
  • Working knowledge of the Model of Human Occupation - desirable
